Change Team:
Welcome to the 2019 Waltham Minor League Blue Jays
by posted 03/16/2019

Hello all,

Paul Buckley, Rob Peterson, and I (Steve Benoit,) will be the coaches for this year's Minor Blue Jays and we're excited to have your sons on the team. We've got a bunch of great kids and great families on our squad this year, so we're looking forward to playing some ball.

You can find all of the information for the team on the Waltham Youth Baseball website and you can also grab the SI Play app which will come in handy for schedule updates, messaging, notifications, and polls should we need to see who will make it to a practice or game.

Pre-Season Batting Cages:
WYB is nice enough to give each team 3 hours of batting cage time at Extra Innings in Watertown. We're currently scheduled for 3/24, 3/31, 4/7 @ 1pm. If you know at this point that you won't be able to make it to any of these tunnel times, just let me know. I'll send out reminders prior to, as well.

Practice / Game Schedule:
We're scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays @ 5:30pm. We're unsure of filed assignments currently, but will update when we can. The league tends to move right into games without time for practice, so we may also try to fit in a few practices on other days if we can.

There will also be games scheduled during April vacation if we can field enough players, so let us know when you can if you already have plans and won't be able to attend those games.

Season Start:
If the fields are in good enough shape and we get the OK from the city, the season is set to kick off the week of April 8th.

New This Year for Rookies:
If you're moving up from Rookies, there will be a few new aspects to the game this year including—most notably—kid pitch and stealing bases on a passed ball. We'll be working through those new skills in the first few weeks, but it never hurts to have the kids watch some baseball highlights (or instructional videos) of those things before we start just to get their minds headed in the right direction.

Equipment:
The league provides each player with a jersey and hat, and we will have team catching equipment.

Parents are responsible for the following:
  • Batting Helmet with Cage
  • Glove
  • Pants: We suggest grabbing at least two pairs of white baseball pants for the season.
  • Cleats
A Note About Bats:
We will have team bats, but if your son has his heart set on their own bat, please make sure they meet the Little League Baseball bat specifications and that it has a USABat logo on it. And at this age, we have some older kids who can throw the ball pretty fast, so keep in mind a lighter / smaller bat is probably favorable, even though the big barreled, heavier bats seem like fun.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Opening Day Parade:
TBD. You'll probably receive many emails about this from the league and myself. :)

I think that about covers it for now. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to drop me ( ), Paul ( ), or Rob ( ) a line.

Looking forward to a great season!

Best,
Steve Benoit
